PERUBAHAN PENDEKATAN AMERIKA SERIKAT TERHADAP ONE CHINA POLICY DI ERA PRESIDEN DONALD TRUMP

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the changes that have occurred in the United States' approach to the One China Policy, which initially used an engagement strategy to become a contaiment. The One China Policy has been the main pillar in the formation of cooperation between the United States and China since the 1970s. However, this policy experienced a shift in approach after Donald Trump became President of the United States. This raises a research gap about why there is a change in approach in the Donald Trump era. This research uses an explanatory method with a qualitative approach to explore the factors that influence these changes and see the form of change. The author also uses the theory of Neoclassical realism as a theory to analyze the factors that cause change. Data was obtained through analysis of official documents, policy statements related to the change in approach, and also from related news portals. The results showed that there was a change in the strategy of the United States' approach from using an engagement strategy to contaiment. This led to changes such as the emergence of Donald Trump's statement that he wanted to review the One China Policy and increase cooperation between the United States and Taiwan. This is all influenced by economic and national security factors, as well as by the ideological and internal political factors of the United States, which views China's increasing military and economic power as a threat to the US status quo.
